As I expected, it seems that Universes Beyond as a whole isn't inherently problematic with the player base. It's more about how it's managed/presented. Only 1/4 of those who answered my poll universally hate it. It seems that, if done better, it would be even more successful — properly successful.

I will forever hate the random "blanket everything onto the Reserve List" and the Reserve List itself if for nothing else than because a card like Elephant Graveyard costs anywhere between $250-$300. If that card were printed today, it'd a be a bulk-whatever at like $0.25-$0.30 tops. 1,000x cheaper.
