Chat Gpt 5 is the butt of jokes among the LinkedIn AI crowd. This feels like an inflection point. There were a few people saying that hyperscaling LLMs would fail in 2023 but they were voices howling in the wilderness. Now it's becoming industry consensus.

OpenAI and Anthropic investors are enabling them to sell compute at a massive loss which is propping up thousands of smaller operations most of which are also selling at a loss. Nvidia Capex factors into this as well. Anthropic is giving off Lehman vibes. It could be the trigger.

These new AI data centres will pop the bubble. Why? Hyperscaling LLMs drives up operating costs enormously but doesn't generate more income. They are setting cash on fire like Heath Ledgers joker. Meanwhile foreign investors are withdrawing support.

The USA is literally betting the farm on hyperscaling LLMs to some gravity defying outcome. There's no evidence to support this. Meanwhile China and Europe are developing alternatives to American hyperscaled LLMs with noticeable success.

It really smashes the idea of the heroic lone inventor. To me. Thousands of people were describing and mapping out the world wide web for years. Berners-Lee was the first one with the budget to do it.

LLMs won't scale up to AGI. Also true: LLMs will improve in future and solutions are being built that work within their limitations. The left used to own the future, now it retreats from it.

I think they might have boiled their own frog. What isn't well understood is that Big Tech is backstopped by Americas hegemonic power and foreign investment. Big Tech is destroying both. The EU wants a few more years of US arms shipments to Ukraine. When that's done, the gloves come off.

I remember a Canadian white supremacist who regularly got into trouble with the law because he used a photocopier to disseminate his ideas. This enforcement wasn't controversial in society. All those safeguards were discarded by tech platforms that are now overtly backing Trump.

One thing that irks me about the "AI BAD!" discourse here is that it equates Americas Big Tech sector to the technology. It's rest of the world erasure. America's hegemonic power is declining, foreign investment (Big Tech's lifeblood) is plunging. Interesting things are going to happen.

My most Dad belief is that almost all "technology problems" are actually "business model" problems.

The AI discourse here is bonkers. It's quite common for people to believe that even if an application is ethical and useful it should be rejected because the body of research informing it is tainted with original sin.

I think what is foundational to trust in society is healthcare. There's some empirical evidence to support this (sorry I don't have a link) but when that doctor patient trust erodes so does trust in society more broadly. But we're way past that now, this is an unraveling across domains.

I think AI can be a useful technology (not the slop kind) but it won't happen by default, we'll have to fight for it.

AI should be criticized and scrutinized but it needs better criticism. Saying "this shouldn't exsist" repeatedly has no impact other than to render your voice irrelevant.

Small biases in data sets can grow exponentially in AI training. One source of bias is race, which for years was treated as a biological construct, not a social construct in medical literature. The result isa lot of Health AI models contain large biases that negatively impact nonwhites.

I think AI is going to force us to confront the value of culture. There are some who only think of it in economic terms, revenue generation. But where does that leave us? With corporations and machines telling our stories for us, and only for one reason, to increase the value of an asset.
