It’s fun to play with gain structure. One can crank 70dB of gain from the phono stage alone, almost all of which is thrown away in the preamp. Or, dial the phono stage back to 46dB & do 1:1 in the preamp, & get a completely different tone. Instead of op-amp swing, it’s trafo tang.

Lately I’ve had recurring dreams of not finishing my PhD, or being let go from my postdoctoral advisor’s lab, or last night’s nonsense of bacterial plates left near the cell culture area. None of these traumas ever happened. I never dream about the actual trauma of carrying mail for 6 months.

It’s been raining for days & I haven’t ridden so I spent time in the garage resurrecting an amp project. I had to pull a bunch of filter capacitors & scrounge some other parts to build a dual rail supply, so it cost nothing. I’m listening to it now. Sorry, I took no good pictures of the guts.

This is how I spent my New Years, building yet another phono stage from parts on hand while I wait for a Mouser delivery. I’ll be back at work on Monday, I don’t have a chassis for this, what even am I doing
