We studied the endemic stonechat of Fuerteventura and found something surprising: areas specifically designated to protect birds (SPAs) are not effectively covering most of its population. Nearly half of the individuals, and most of its occupied área, lie outside these boundaries.

Even more striking: during the 2024 population crash, unprotected areas became critical refuges, while static reserve borders failed to track the species’ shifting distribution.
