A new UCL study reveals it takes 3.5 years on average to get a #dementia diagnosis after symptoms appear, and even longer for early-onset cases. This delay means missed chances for treatment. New Alzheimer’s drugs like lecanemab and donanemab are designed to work best in the early stages.

1 in 10 people with #dementia are diagnosed with mixed dementia, but what is it and how is it diagnosed? Mixed dementia is when someone has 2 or more types of dementia at the same time. It can be difficult to diagnose because symptoms from multiple types of dementia can overlap.

A new Alzheimer's blood test has shown 95% accuracy in detecting early symptoms, according to recent research. The blood test identifies two proteins—amyloid beta 42/40 and p-tau21 which are linked to the disease. Blood tests for Alzheimer’s are not currently available in the UK/NHS.

The US Food and Drug Administration has cleared the first blood test to diagnose Alzheimer's disease. The NHS is currently studying the use of blood tests to diagnose dementia. This could mean blood tests are available for diagnosing dementia in the UK by 2029.

Over 15,000 people have a diagnosis of dementia with Lewy bodies in the UK. However, its estimated that roughly 100,000 people are living with the condition. BRACE funds vital research into all forms of dementia including dementia with Lewy bodies and Parkinson's disease dementia.

BRACE is saddened to announce the sudden passing of Sylvia Perry. Sylvia was a BRACE supporter for many years, serving as a Board member from 2009 - 2021. During her time on the Board she brought with her a wealth of business experience that was invaluable to the development of BRACE.

Recent research has found that the shingles vaccine may reduce the risk of developing dementia by up to 20%. It's still unclear how this vaccine may affect the development of dementia but some researcher's think it could be to do with reducing inflammation.

In 2024, BRACE spent 75p in every £1 on our charitable aims and funded almost £800k of research. BRACE is currently supporting 24 different projects, 10 PhD students, the South West Dementia Brain Bank and a Dementia Research Nurse. None of this would be possible without our incredible supporters.

More than 180,000 people in the UK have Vascular dementia, the second most common type of dementia. Blood carries important substances to the brain like oxygen and nutrients. Without these, cells in the brain can’t work properly and eventually die, which can lead to Vascular dementia.

BRACE is proud to have funded £404,550 towards dementia research at Cardiff University, since 2015. This includes a pilot project by Dr Rebecca Sims, which is looking at specific repeating parts of the human genome to find links between mutations and the risk of Alzheimer’s disease! 🧬
