Has anyone in the UK done the age assurance thing on here? What will I be missing if I don’t? I dislike the idea of having to give ID to a third party to verify my age because of yet another ill-informed new policy.

We are 36 hours into the race, meaning the three runners still on Loop 3 cannot continue to Loop 4. However, if they complete Loop 3 within 40 hours they will be credited with a Fun Run. That’s where the real race is now. #BM100

At the heart of every attack on disability benefits is the myth disabled people “get perks”: a free car, loads of cash, a life off work. It misrepresents the reality of disability, whilst exploiting low wages and high living costs to make the public envy people in daily pain.

Drastic cuts to PIP will affect as many as 1 million disabled and ill people, pushing them into severe hardship, worsening physical and mental health, and isolation. There is no credible argument for pulling help from people shouldering the high costs of disability. Cruelty dressed up as reform.

Been away from here for a little while as I dove headfirst into data familiarisation. I'm now doing my first round of coding and I'm excited, find the data incredibly interesting, but also it's scary. I seem to find first rounds the hardest, but that's okay. Right? #PhDLife #AutRes

Started familiarisation today. What strikes me so far is just how much autistic patient participants thought about what other patients might need to successfully access healthcare. I was asking about their needs, but the needs of others were at the forefront of their answers. Empathy in spades. 🥹

I’ve finished transcribing the interviews! I can’t wait for Monday to start getting deeply acquainted with the data and the stories participants so generously shared. #PhD #AutRes

I joke that I’m already pretty old for an AuDHDer (I turn 40 this year). I suspect healthcare access (lack of) is a great contributor. My PhD focuses on autistic adults but a similar study for ADHDers would be helpful, I think.

"Neurodivergent conditions" gives me the ick. It's creeping into everything, incl. policy. It's like NTs needed a shorthand to make their lives easier while appearing to be neuroaffirming, so they co-opted neurodivergent without any understanding of either the neurodiversity movement or paradigm.

I've been a bit silent on here over the winter break, and now I'm coming with a problem (sorry!). I am trying to transcribe one of my interviews that I knew would be hard because the audio quality at the time was dreadful. It's almost completely inaudible. #PhDStudent #Research #AutRes 1/

I have run over 2000km this year which is the most number of kms I’ve ever done in a year. I’ve also done 24,509m elevation gain with that. But what’s more, I’m an ADHDer with a hobby that has stuck! Like, properly stuck! The views definitely help. #WomenWhoRun #TrailRunning #SheRunsCardiff

Day 22: the perfect gift for a researcher is time and a reduction of cognitive load elsewhere. Maybe my answer is more for neurodivergent researchers, but honestly someone to do my life admin would be the best gift of all. #ResearchAdvent

Day 21: My theoretical framework(s): these are some of the ones I frequently return to because of what I research: epistemic injustice, the double empathy problem, neurodiversity paradigm. I may need to learn more about relevance theory for my PhD but I’m not a linguist 😬. #ResearchAdvent

Day 20: I’d like to meet more neurodivergent neurodiversity researchers (including specific neurodivergences such as ADHD) based in South Wales. So if you are one or know of one, please let me know. #ResearchAdvent

Day 19: Approach to analysis. Critical reflexive thematic analysis that follows Braun and Clarke’s six steps while paying attention to discourses and constructions of power (as used by Terry and Braun). I’m looking forward to this stage of my PhD which starts next month. #ResearchAdvent

Day 18: inspiration - The Autistic Autism researchers who carved the path I can walk down. Motivation - When NICE rejected much of our stakeholder input because there “wasn’t enough evidence” I said I’d do what I could to get some (which sounds a bit god complex written down 🫣) #ResearchAdvent

#ResearchAdvent Day 17 Nourishment, rest and health: not something everyone in academia has access to. Students, ECRs, zero-hour contracts mean many rely on food banks, work themselves into burnout for free or low pay.

Day 17: I was woken at about 3am by my eldest who had a fever and a 45 min nosebleed. I’m at the tail end of a horrid cold and approaching burnout. Rather than muddle through the rest of the week I emailed my supervisors to say I’d resume in the new year. Rest matters. #ResearchAdvent

Officially looking for a new job if anyone is in the market for a RA specialising in Neurodivergence.

Day 16: Public engagement. I did more of this in my advocacy roles than while being a PhD student. I do, however, do community engagement (and pay for time as much as funding has allowed). I’m hoping I get more confident engaging with public about my research soon. #ResearchAdvent

Day 15: My favourite place to research/study is my office, preferably with someone else in it. I have lost the ability to work effectively from home, and benefit from body doubling and having someone to talk thoughts through with. Never thought I’d become that person. #ResearchAdvent

Day 14: In three years I’ll look back and think that 40+ wasn’t too old to be completing a PhD because I’d have aged anyway. Plus my children have seen just how much hard work goes into completing higher education as they’ve been there for it all. #ResearchAdvent

Day 13: What I love most about my PhD research is holding space for people to tell their stories and to listen to their ideas about how to make healthcare more accessible. It is always such a privilege to hear them. #ResearchAdvent

Day 12: Appreciation for @draimeegrant.bsky.social who helped me believe in myself (and wrote an amazing reference) so I could start my PhD. I loved research from the moment I started as a PPI/community expert and Aimee was fundamental in that experience. #ResearchAdvent

Day 11: I'm excited about having two weeks off soon, and actually having two weeks off. No email checking, no reading (for PhD), no writing. Two weeks of spending time with my family, sleeping, watching movies, and running. I cannot wait. #ResearchAdvent

Day 10: About methodology: I take the same stance with critical autism studies as Schalk and Minich with critical disability studies - it's a methodology not a topic of study. This includes an emancipatory framework, researcher transparency, co-production, autistic voice 1/3 #ResearchAdvent
