My main problem with Substack right now is that its payment thing (Stripe) doesn’t work from where I live. I’d have to have someone that could receive the money and then give it to me through paypal which sounds really tiring for whoever ends up doing it and also don’t know if I can trust enough!

I think I found what about WEAPONS reminds me of Raúl Ruiz. Its insistence on symbols and objects that could have a clear interpretation and significance, but that are thrown away in favor of something else. That's essentially Ruiz.

anyway, in better news, I might start a new job tuesday? the funny thing is, it was at a place I've already worked at. they changed the people in charge who fired me four years ago, and they want me back because those people were asshats.

It saddens me immensely to think about all those years I adored mubi and dreamed of being part of it in some way, and being so proud of myself when I got into notebook with some of the best writing I've ever done, and then finally landing an enormous project, and two weeks into it, getting the news.

Like, between all of the things that I've thought regarding Weapons, both good and bad, and how ambivalent I'm towards it... today I realized that Benedict Wong was acting and not actually *under the influence*. Like, I know, it's a movie. But, holy shit. Benedict Wong did all of that. He's so good.

It's profoundly saddening to read that AP will no longer be assigning or running book reviews because readers don't engage with them enough and they take too much effort to plan and assign. People complain about critics as gatekeepers; wait until all that's left is marketing.

Ruiz made films because he liked making them and was the only thing he knew what to do and liked to do, so he could keep buying truffles, wine, caviar and expensive first edition books. We have to come to terms with that. I bet that if he knew how to make more "popular" fare he'd do it.
