I don't know if Portal 1 is strictly better than Portal 2, but I do love how many walls are left white, regardless of if they're part of the solution or not. Level design in general in the first game is a lot more freeform. It's a neat contrast after playing Portal 2 for a couple hundred hours.

The Quake 1 axe sound is just the Metal Hit sound from Korg M1, and the signature grenade bounce is in fact the same sound nearly 2 octaves lower.
add a skeleton here at some point

I feel like it'd be fruitful to make a list of common design choices regarding things like cameras, controls, accessibility and so on. It's annoying making a game, trying to figure out what is missing from a system you're building and having to play a bunch of games in the same genre to check.

Nintendo games have such an intense hard-on for making you watch long-winded explainations for toddlers every 2 minutes. I've been playing Mario Odyssey for like 10 minutes and I've skipped like 20+ cutscenes.

It seems incredibly weird that we haven't defaulted to bumper buttons used for core actions in games, especially in platformers. Who wants to move their thumb from the camera to the A button to perform the most basic of all platformer inputs? It'd be like having shooting in an FPS on A.

Sometimes I'll be having a great day and then suddenly remember that Dark Souls is the only Souls game which pulls off such a fantastically interwoven world. The level design of that game is second to none, so much so that the entire genre lives in its shadow.

One of my least fav design patterns in games that's shockingly pervasive is "punishing" bad gameplay via tedium rather than failure. Devs realized that they can make games more casual friendly if the failure state is just a type of "winning slower" rather than losing, as a consequence even action -

Progress on my Quake Sewer Jam 3 map. These models were hand sculpted in blender and then converted to brushes with OBJ2MAP, 800 faces per model. Baking is done with combined, so the normals and the lights are baked in the texture.

Portraits I made pixel version of for Fixeight Exa Label. I worked off of new concept/promotional art by Nanpei Kaneko, who also did the promo art and ingame portraits for the original arcade version. Each of the portraits is 16 colours (including the black) and are in 15bit colourdepth. Fun times.

I'm quite glad that lots of these PS1 horror titles have been leaning into old-school "clunky" gamefeel more often lately. It's a bit of a shame that every single PS1 classic gets remade and seemingly by-default adopts an over-the-shoulder perspective.

There is honestly no game which will make you feel more like a ninja than a shmup. Ninja Gaiden, Tenchu, nothing comes close to weaving through a gigantic fuck-off wall off bullets after finessing the enemy AI into giving you juuuuuuust enough room to glide your center pixel between it all.
