In 21 years of teaching, I have yet to meet a stupid student. What I have met in growing numbers is students who don’t know why they’re in college and being taught the material they’re learning. The crisis, to my mind, is not one of capability but of purpose.

Nothing makes me realize that my priorities in life may be a little askew like sitting in the waiting room of a walk in clinic after being rear ended and getting whiplash symptoms, but looking at the clock sadly because I'm missing a lecture in a class I'm not even a student in.

This failed capacity to imagine the future is a logical result, ironically, of a generalized condescension towards the past. Whole sets of ppl have been told that the history of human culture doesn’t matter, & that for anything to be worthwhile it needs to be “new.” It is a special form of naïveté.

This school year I've had to put a lot of things on hold, specifically any work on math history and the classroom. It was really hard to do, but with temporarily letting go I have been able to experience new things, learn, connect with people, fail, grow, and yearn to return to the niche I love.

Applying for masters programs, and it asks if I'm cis or trans or choose not to say. I don't know how much I like that this is a question on the application; feels weird.

Paulo Freire completely changed the way I think about education as a whole and forced me to ask how math curriculum has been shaped, what its purpose is, and what ends it actually achieves.

Can't stop thinking about the fact that the government is literally slashing public service jobs while bringing in AI for use in the public service. They are literally doing, as a government, what we scream at tech bros for doing to their employees. Pretty gross!
