I don't commission very often, if only cuz lack of funds, but I also carefully keep an eye artists I'd like to commission of my OC's when the time comes. This is one of the main things I look out for cuz black folks aren't often the subject of many artists' desire to draw.

I had to explain this to my non- black mutuals on insta recently. No I’m not ignoring the commissions posts but it has been years being mutuals and I’ve never seen y’all drawing any black characters. I like and stuff but you can’t have my money.

And out here ringing the alarm AGAIN about AI- to the same results...

And when you give back to those creators--a comment, a share, a tip--you help carry some of the weight so they can keep creating. It doesn't fix the systemic problems, but it helps. And sometimes it makes the difference in whether or not they can keep creating in the face of everything else.

This is part of why I think it's pivotally important to go out of your way to enjoy art by marginalized creators. It's not just harder to break in; it's an upward battle to even *make* things when you're constantly under stress. There are SO many stories going untold bc of this so savor what exists.

Spent most of 2025 learning this the hard way after going through burnout too many times

A reminder that the key to writing is getting the very best out of your brain, but in order to get the best out of it you have to take care of your mental health. Stress, concern, and depression will take a toll on your work. So always make sure to take care of YOU and you'll get your best work.
