FOSS software has a mountain of issues and skill barriers, and troubleshooting can be a pain in the ass. but is that really so different from the frustrations we already have to deal with? at least with linux, the entire machine is open to you. and i think it's a privilege to learn how it works!

it should be understood at this point that the obfuscation of modern tech interfaces are motivated more by the desire to control user behavior and desensitize them to extractive & wasteful consumer patterns than they are by a desire to make the computer more accessible.

there's a general sense that having to look under the hood of a computer is too much to ask of a user, to the point that tech companies often bend over backwards to make it as hard to do so as possible. but a computer is a tool, and tools take work to learn how to use properly.

it took a little guided futzing in the command line, which was intimidating at first. but what i realized very quickly is that you're only doing what computers already do, just without the extra layer of abstraction. and then, suddenly, it stopped being intimidating and became empowering.

i put linux on my old laptop a month ago as a test case. i've been using computers for decades but i don't know code or command line shit or anything. and while there were some initial hiccups in getting things set up right, i've found the "linux isn't user-friendly" line to be vastly overstated.

i'm generally slightly more reserved with my public presence (in a big part due to growing up in a country that was very hostile to me), but it is still fucked up that people get bullied off the platform because a joke they made for their inner circle on a personal account got taken out of context
