im rebuilding and simultaneously open sourcing our automated moderation stack. these are the types of things that every bluesky fork or non-bluesky atproto application is going to need, and i really want to see those tools available

there's some more to do here in the repo to get it where i want, but will probably write a leaflet soon on making moderation work for people that are not Bluesky PBC. hoping that this will be a good step in that direction.

And this doesn’t mean Bluesky or AT Protocol are THE answer to the problem of building social media that is much hard for authoritarians to control - but it has been the most compelling effort I’ve seen in this space so far, and the one I’ve actually enjoyed using most. We need more such efforts.

And yes, while Mastodon isn’t my thing and I prefer AT Proto to Activity as federated social media infrastructure, I am VERY glad it exists and is being built out, too. The future absolutely requires online communication hubs that can’t be bought by dead-eyed Nazis.

You don’t need to become an expert on AT Protocol, you don’t need to learn to code, but I really do want to impress upon people that “federated social media” is a vitally important concept in a time of global authoritarian and technofeudalist consolidation.

You absolutely should not dismiss the AT Protocol technology that runs this place as boring nerd stuff, because that is the exact technology we are going to need to ensure that usable social media that isn’t controlled by Nazis continues to exist.

u can just read my posts and see how i feel about pretty much anything thats happening. im very open about it. always have been. you can also just ask instead of they/theming me behind the scenes.

a post: you don't need to talk about "the trans person" at bluesky behind the scenes. you don't need to make assumptions like "she probably hates herself". you don't need to use me in your arguments about anything that happens on this site unless its something i do. stop it pls.

this isn't even primarily a complaint about "drama" or something, on a fundamental level i think the way we conceptualize these platforms is whack... what exactly is "bluesky" in the sentence "drama on bluesky"? i assume 99% of bluesky users never encounter this drama... so where does it take place?

"how are these people allowed to exist on gmail??" well, they're using a different email provider first of all, and if you take issues with their posts then you can use filters, maybe a spam service, ban them from your email lists, etc.

my ultimate wish from open/decentralized protocols is for the medium/platform to play a lesser role in shaping what's talked about. i don't want people to "post on bluesky", i want people to just post. no one says "there's new drama on gmail!" or "who's the main character on my phone app today"

but its worth paying attention to how conversations on the feeds actually happen. see for example when bsky asked for feedback on TOS, where 'banning for breaking rules off-site' barely came up in the user base

because this isnt really about accountability at all. bsky's position is pretty clear: singal didnt break the rules while on bsky, and they wont ban people for off-platform behaviour. theres good reason to disagree with the mod choice regarding the second point (which i also do)

I remember when Reddit was entirely dominated by programming+startup content. It was totally unappealing to most people. Fix was straightforward: adding subcommunities, so users could choose what people+culture+content they were interacting with. Scopes down the network in exactly the right way.

it's interesting how people overestimating the worth of their posts results in many different insane behaviors, from "don't use my posts for AI training" to "we built this site"

The sorta urr-idea behind this all that things have to try and be for everyone, and everyone must be served, no matter how much the core art suffers is just like idk an extremely capitalistic idea???

People will yell about accessibility, but accessibility is a braille translation, not a book rewritten as if it was a simple english wikipedia entry. Sometimes the friction is needed to appreciate the art, and sometimes you have to build your fluency up to appreciate something. That's just culture!!

Difficulty has been too farmed as some weird pride/exclusion thing rather than looking at it as a tool that drives engagement with the systems of a game. Games can be too hard for no reason in the way that sometimes prose in a book can be unnecessary obtuse, but difficult prose can be NECESSARY.

There's the substance of the signal issue, and then there's the pattern of behavior that jay was responding to -- the constant, _constant_ off topic responses that make this tedious. On the substance, it's really just that the guy didn't violate the ToS. I'm sorry, that's just it
