kinda funny how "you should stop being so confrontational" is in itself a confrontational statement… ye olde paradox of tolerance shows up again. but really, please. i genuinely want people to be less confrontational. and if you see me being a hypocrite in some way here then please let me know.

when people close most avenues of disagreement i think it only leads to them feeling even more under attack, now also from illegitimate sources, and it's just a bad feedback loop of creating more and more out-groups, and it leads to misinformation spreading like wildfire...

where the line is drawn between disagreement and safety concerns isn't crystal clear by any means. i'm not arguing there's no line, i'm arguing that people legitimately feel under threat from some things, and pull the line back way too far to encompass everything else as well.

i don't think we can individualize larger concerns like this. it has to be okay to disagree or else we can never get along with anyone different from us, which is everyone. having a different understanding of a problem or a different solution to someone else's becomes an act of hostility...

just because a topic is life and death, doesn't mean that someone disagreeing with your take on that topic is itself an act of life and death. part of living in a society and being in community with others is to be able to, where it doesn't impose a safety concern, interact with others who disagree.

usually the topics are not that serious, but even then... it is life and death for people that single-payer health care is implemented in the US. is it life and death whether your mutual thinks that's true or that a system with private insurers but with safety nets would be preferable?

please, everyone, imprint this line on your retinas: "agree to disagree" you can think someone likes or agrees with some bad thing without believing they are somehow uniquely responsible for the harm you think the bad thing causes. they're just someone who's wrong on the internet... dime a dozen.

can we, for the love of god, turn down the heat... by a lot? why is every disagreement online nowadays a life or death situation?? even me framing it as a "mere disagreement" could get people mad at me... i feel that, as i type it out, instinctively in the back of my neck. this sucks!!!

i don't argue with mutuals about divisive topics, and i'd like to keep it that way, but there are some lines you can cross where i will just have to unfollow you... advocating for the death of others who may or may not include me is absolutely one of them. man, i'm tired...

its actually really cool that instead of having my own account system i can now just integrate atproto oauth into whatever project i'm making and instantly have everything i need in terms of user identity

and all of that because they chose to put their trust in you... lying or distorting the truth is a betrayal of the trust of those who are in the same boat as you. it makes you and everyone who trusted you look like an idiot, a liar, or both.

i dislike lying not just because it makes others not trust "your side", but because it destroys "your own side's" understanding and ability to analyze a situation. it makes people who you're "on the same side with" look like idiots who drunk the kool aid, and they're less able to defend themselves.

the only cases where i think lying or distorting the truth is helpful is if you or someone else is under threat of their wellbeing and there's no good alternative, or if you're protecting your or someone else's privacy or autonomy by not revealing information about yourself or others.

to me it's not really about good or bad means (though i do generally agree that means should be proportionate), but i genuinely care about truth. if your attacks are distorted or untrue, or misinformation you wrongly believe, it makes you untrustworthy. it's noise. the means do not fulfill the ends.

you see it like every time there's drama about something. people don't even understand each other, and they can't because 99% of the time they'll end up interfacing with some asshole that's looking for a fight

there isn't a single engineer at bluesky that i am aware of who isnt capable of reviewing the code they write for accuracy and quality. and im willing to be i left more bugs in the code i wrote by hand than the code i wrote with LLM assistance before leaving.

idk i find the assumptions pretty annoying here. (to be clear i don’t work at bsky anymore but) do you think people there are amateurs. quite a few have 20+ years of experience writing code by hand. talking to them like they’re clueless as engineers is just wishful thinking projection

From my perspective, AI can be used for good and for bad, and I’m asking myself how it can improve personal computing. I think agents can make people more independent from big business, not less.

AI shows up in the world in some pretty negative ways, especially around misinformation, slop, and spam, and dealing with those issues in a social network are increasingly a focus of my time. I don't have a hard time understanding why a lot of people are suspicious of it as a result.

Part of why we've openly talked about our use of coding agents is to be transparent about it. It's also because it's a shocking change to our practice, and I frankly don't know how I could avoid talking about it as a software enthusiast. I genuinely can't believe what these things can do.

I do want to make sure we're being clear about this: The Bluesky team maintains the same review, red-teaming, and QA processes that we always have. AI coding tools have been proving useful, but haven't changed the fundamental practices of good engineering. Human review and direction remain key.
