Dungeon Crawler Cash

Decided to go check in Traveller 5e now it's in stretch goal territory. Glad to see we have unlocked erm, character sheets. Those are really going to enhance the experience of playing versus not having them.

The response to all of this is interest because a lot of people are talking about this campaign as if it is wildly successful, but actually it is yet to reach 800 people. That isn't a huge number. This is successfully extracting a lot of cash from a relatively small number of people.

There is a lot to unpack with Traveller 5e, and lots of people are doing that. I'm just going to talk about a little bit of that's a little slice of me browsing the page went. Our story starts here, with some cool tokens. I am actually a sucker for stuff like this.

I own something like 30 feet of RPG books and I've only properly read a fraction of them and only used a fraction of the read ones at the table. I am at least as concerned with the experience of browsing them for ideas and reading them for enjoyment as I am using them at the table.

It's worth remembering that with how Kickstarter works, when you raise a hypothetical amount like say 427k USD, you receive more like 385k because of KS fees and payment processing. So if you were then, hypothetically of course, to be in a position where everyone wants refunds it'd cost you 42k.

Recently I've seen a few 'successful' TTRPG folks framed as if their success means they are now drenched in cash / running big businesses. On any kind of scale except comparing to the DIY and hobbyist folks, this just isn't true. RPGs are a tiny field in terms of headcount and money.

So I know about ARKYVR. What other RPGs are there where recording/media creation are explicitly part of the game? Like, I get you can play a journalist in Call of Cthulhu and make up that part of your job, but it isn't part of the game. It doesn't have its own mechanics and it isn't centred.

Real suggestions from Real RRD employees

So many people have entirely false perceptions of the breadth of what RPGs are. Whether that is an inaccurate idea of DnD, an *accurate* idea of DnD, an understanding Pathfinder exists too, or also that GURPS exists. Most people I have introduced to RPGs are surprised by them.

Starting to really look forward to DragonMeet this year. A lot of you UK folks it feels like I've not seen in age. Please say hello to me, it's my 98th con and I'm extremely confident meeting new people. Con tip: bring a spork. Excellent for food eating and better than a banana for self defence.

It's a shame because hiring a diverse and skilled bunch of people and paying them well for their time seems like a cool idea. But I am so not on board with anything that elevates GMing into a mysterious art form beyond the ken of mere mortals that takes wads of cash or years of esoteric study.

I saw a comment in this thread - which Grant responded to perfectly - about how we shouldn't criticize this since some of the teachers are POC. Sure, don't rock POCs for their hustle. But it doesn't change the fact that this does NOT help our industry or marginalized workers as a whole very much.

The number of folks publicly cancelling GenCon attendance is growing, and the number quietly not attending is growing more. I can't yet decide if it'll have a big enough impact to make the con feel different overall, but the number of people who will notice as con-goers must be going up too.

My greatest contribution to the team was failing every single roll, tripping devil balls, throwing a bomb in a small chamber and rolling a nat 1, and ultimately being dissolved in demonic acid. Fun was had.
