Absolutely. People also differ in power and privilege so how languages mix also reflects this. It’s important to understand sometimes the push for linguistic ‘purity’ reflects these unequal language dynamics: this is how I contextualise anti-English sentiments in the BSL and Auslan communities.

Kenya was front and center thanks to Margaret Odhiambo (now at Univ of Hamburg). Her presentation shared the Effects on Deaf Students of Glossing Kenyan Sign Language in Written English. I loved how she asked for input from the audience to generate ideas to improve education of deaf Kenyans.
