If you're wondering about the slop problem on Steam this year... oh boy. When I prepped a talk for @gamerepublic.bsky.social's event on Jan 28th, the number of 2026 games with AI disclosures was 268. Checking today (March 25th) for a talk next week, it's at 1423. A 430% increase in 2 months.

Placeholder assets in a game should look obnoxiously temporary, so obvious that no one would mistake it for the final asset. In past games we've used the doge dog (rip) as an icon, hot pink versions of characters, our CEO's head, etc. If you use a temp asset that seems passable, it may stay there.

Ah I see Crimson Desert is the latest to run the 'gen AI art was temporary and we forgot about it' excuse. If you actually forgot about it, then you lack appropriate studio policies for using genAI tooling. But then they conveniently only added the AI disclosure to Steam earlier today.

So DLSS5 has the same input setup since DLSS2: - Rendered engine frame(s) - Motion vector to determine how pixel data is moving. The only differences since then are additional frames for frame generation (see my video) and changes to the core model for performance. youtu.be/M3Lf0XpgWSc?...

Best I ever reached on this list for my own games was 5. Working for others, 6. But one of my favourite things I've ever achieved in my gamedev career is that one of my games became my brother's favourite for a short while. Last I checked and he still dominates some Xbox leaderboards.

Integrating the NVIDIA face renderer into DLSS was always going to be dicey - and I'm surprised they tried tbh. It fails at the first hurdle: the upscaled re-faced Grace Ashcroft should at least look like the high-res version of her, be it in-game or in marketing. These are two different people.

With GDC 2026 proving once again the significant disparity between the hype and reality of generative AI, it's time we regained control of the narrative. A big thank you to the folks at @gibiz.bsky.social for inviting me to write this op/ed for their AI week.

So GDC 2026 attendance has been confirmed to be around 20,000. But it didn't drop 10k in a year. G DC 2025 reported 30k "registrants", versus 2024's 30k attendees. During the summit post-mortems last summer I challenged that figure and they confirmed to me 2025 attendance was around 25k.

As I've said before, studios will keep flirting with generative AI at the fringes of big budget developments - thus making it easy to remove later if the winds go against them. But the damage has already been done. This has set a precedent for other studios to follow and it's going to happen soon.
