Safe streets advocate
Fascinating how the human body is so intertwined with the sun, from skin pigment attenuation for vitamin D3 production, to the evolution of circadian rhythms around light/dark cycles, and pupillary light reflex in response to low/high light conditions. Yes Iâm extremely jet lagged, why do you ask?

Ok after staying in an *extremely* transit and bike oriented city for a week, I am now 100% convinced that excellent transit and bike infrastructure alone is not enough. Speed bumps, road diets, parking elimination, with the express goal of making it hard to drive. Itâs the only way.

đšHopkins Streetđš With an important Council committee vote coming on April 15, it's time, yet again, to speak up for pedestrianđ¶ââïž, bicycle đČ, and transit đ improvements on Hopkins! Take actionđ

Make Hopkins Street Safe for ALL!
On April 15, Berkeley City Council Facilities, Infrastructure, Transportation, Environment & Sustainability (FITES) Committee will weigh in on a proposal several Councilmembers have put forward to repave Hopkins Street without any bike or transit infrastructure improvements. Act now to urge the FITES committee to instead recommend repaving Hopkins with pedestrian, bike, and transit improvements, as approved in an earlier 8-1 council vote. We can't afford to miss this opportunity. Protected bike lanes on Hopkins will provide critical low-stress bicycle connections to schools and other key destinations for people of all ages and abilities. If the City does not create those connections when the street is repaved, there will continue to be a significant gap in the Cityâs low-stress bike network, likely for decades. Send the committee a letter now to let them know that making Hopkins Street safe for ALL is important to you.

The reasons why these horrendous PSAâs exist start to become clear once you realize these agencies believe the streets, as designed, are the state of the art. So death and injury is simply a matter of user error. Nothing to change, nothing to consider otherwise.

The irony here is that Berkeley and Albanys' "parallel bikeways" project's will be delivered on a faster cadence (construction in early 2027) than would have been possible otherwise. Also, these sections of SPA are being designed in a way as to not preclude bus/bike lanes in the future.

how are decision makers in your district concerned enough about bike safety issues to support drastic state law changes, but not concerned enough to even pick up the phone & talk to reps from the org that's worked on East Bay bike safety issues for over 50 years?
