9/ I have seen this question thousands of times in my life on as many residency applications and would never have thought to advise a client that it would include an internship with the UN. Would you?

8/ Again, that was an INTERNSHIP with the branch of the UN which specifically assists Palestinian refugees. This would properly be disclosed on the employment history section, not this question which is more about affiliate groups and membership-based organizations. This is *awful* precedent

7/ A less expected but still predictable outcome: the BIA held that Khalil misrepresented his association with any "organization, association, fund, foundation, party, club society, or similar group..." bc he did not disclose a brief INTERNSHIP with the UNITED NATIONS on his residency application

5/ Anyone who knows this precedent can't possibly have expected a different outcome from the Board. Fortunately, the case will now be reviewed by a higher court. Unfortunately that court will be the Fifth Circuit. But fwiw bc of the end of Chevron deference, they are not bound by this interpretation

Not to sound like a broken record, but I feel like I have things pretty much together in my life and I feel so alone. I've got really good friends, hobbies, and a good career and yet romance just isn't in my life! I've been on three dates since October and none of them were that great!

One last thought: not every journalist is equipped to tell these stories and doing it badly is harmful, too.

And then if they are willing to talk, you have to corroborate so much because surprise! editors often come at these stories with deep skepticism of the women! And lawyers read your copy. And victims (rightly so!) get spooked. Then fact check comes in. It’s time-consuming and just…hard.

I have contacted so many people over the last 15 years or so and said something like, “I heard you might have a story to tell about xyz” and every time I know it probably scares the shit out of them that a journalist had heard something somehow about them.

Man, we have the same conversations every time a major story like this breaks. It’s exhausting. It is SO HARD to publish a story about gendered violence for a whole host of reasons, a main one being that victims (rightly so!) don’t want to talk.

Most people have no idea how much evidence you need to gather (and how much courage victims need to share the details) to get a story like this past a libel attorney. This graf in CNN's piece offers a glimpse of the effort involved.
