A cGAS-mediated mechanism in naked mole-rats potentiates DNA repair and delays aging Naked mole rats get much older than closely related mamals of a similar size. cGAS mutations may have an important role in this.

A cGAS-mediated mechanism in naked mole-rats potentiates DNA repair and delays aging
Efficient DNA repair might make possible the longevity of naked mole-rats. However, whether they have distinctive mechanisms to optimize functions of DNA repair suppressors is unclear. We find that naked mole-rat cyclic guanosine monophosphate–adenosine ...

hey bluesky 👋 visa hurdles mean I’m looking for opportunities outside the US. I’m a computational biologist (bacterial + phage genomics, postdoc in Koonin’s group @ NIH). I am interested in teaming up on funding apps. reach out if this resonates!

🥳 Very grateful for the support of the ERC Starting Grant for my newly established lab! We will study how transposable elements contribute to mammalian embryonic development. We will have positions available next year. Stay tuned!

Super interesting deep dive into US excess mortality. We're doing better than we were in 1980 but a *lot* worse than every other high-income country.

“One young man sobbed when a guard pushed him to the floor. He said, ‘I’m not a gang member. I’m gay. I’m a barber.’ I believed him. *** He “began to whimper,” as his head was roughly shaved, “folding his hands in prayer as his hair fell.” He “asked for his mother & cried as he was slapped again.”

Pet peeve: I hate how often ppl claim “all the researchers will just move to Europe/Canada!” You vastly under-estimate how little money there is there vs the USA- and unless that changes ASAP this loss is just going to decimate global science, full stop. 🧪🔭

I have been doing entirely too much earnest posting about deep things recently, I need to do a proper thread about hippo testicles or something just to keep myself sane. Oh by the way hippos have migratory testicles.

I maxed out my credit card, emptied my savings account, and took out a loan to move from Alabama to Bethesda, MD. I don’t even qualify for unemployment since I’ve only worked at NIH for a month. I will be financially and medically devastated. Seeking suggestions for anywhere that’s hiring!!

New hope for viral coinfection-based therapeutic approach against Herpesviruses! Gene Drive(GD), a self propagating gene-editing technique via Cas9 mediated homologous recombination inserts the GD with red fluorescent (mCherry) into HSV-1 genome. Specific and non-specific (GD-ns) gRNA were tested.

I also cover a bit of his story - & why he is relatively unknown today, despite the importance of his work. See this 🧵👇
