Browsing comments about campus speech underscores need for more civics education. Hard to grasp logic behind arguments such as: if a person puts up a flag in a random office window, the admin must put up all other possible flags? What?! Also the extremely slippery slope of “only US flags!”.

@bostonu.bsky.social turned a non-story into an issue now getting international attention. Either they miscalculated thinking faculty would be docile & obey. Or someone is making them act against better judgment. If so, let’s hear from them. Let’s debate the issue.

Want to fly a US flag in your dorm window at @bostonu.bsky.social? Sorry, BU's speech police won't let you. Proud of being hetero? You can't fly a straight flag either. BU Terrier flag? Nope. It could offend. No expression visible from campus windows allowed, decreed by some unknown higher ups.

@bostonu.bsky.social’s President, CAS Dean & Operations VP are all decent human beings with, I believe, values that align with BU’s commitments to a diverse, equitable and inclusive community. I don’t think the targeting of the LGBTQ community originates with them. So who made the complaint?
