Oh man, this one really hurts. Thank you for Giles, and then for decades of playing oily bastards who were nothing like Giles and clearly having a ball with that.

I’ve been sick so I haven’t left the house in two days and I’d really like to know what in the Lorax is going on one street over because for the last two days it sounds like they have been cutting down and woodchipping every tree on the block

Great thread/article about the extremely unusual cases of hantavirus on the MV Hondius that I can't stop thinking about - because (1) it's fascinating and (2) it's the only kind of cruise I could ever imagine wanting to go on - filled with lectures and wildlife viewing and visits to penguin colonies

Who brings the Easter eggs? At various times & places these have been: - hare - rabbit - fox - cuckoo - stork - flying church bells - crane - lark - 'heavenly hen' - 'the red-egg bird' - Paschalia the Easter Spirit - flying old man - St Nicholas - God

The problem is that people assume that the Easter traditions they see today have been there since the start, so they focus on 'eggs and bunnies' and think 'ooh must be surviving pagan fertility symbols' instead of tracing the actual history of the customs involved

Eggs were relevant to Easter because they were banned during Lent. This is why you use them all up making pancakes on Shrove Tuesday, and then make a big deal of them when Lent ends, e.g. decorating them, hiding them for kids to find, and of course making your traditional Easter Tansy

The Easter Hare was only one of a remarkable collection of egg-bringing entities including the Easter Fox, the Easter Stork, the Easter Cuckoo, the Flying Church Bells, and the Old Belgian Man Who Flew To Rome To Get Eggs From The Pope. He didn't even become a rabbit until he was exported to America

'but what do eggs and rabbits have to do with Jesus' is as historically oblivious a comment as 'what does a bloke riding around on a herring have to do with Jesus' They both have to do with Lent and the observation of Lent
