We’re not even through the first morning of this shutdown, and Project 2025’s architect is already hard at work hurting New Yorkers on Donald Trump’s orders. The fact is that the president’s home city hates him – for a small man like Trump, the only answer to that is revenge.

It’s past midnight, and that means the Trump Shutdown has officially begun. Let’s be clear, folks. Republicans control the House, Senate, and White House. They created this crisis. So how much pain do Americans need to feel before they end it?

House Democrats refuse to stand by while millions of Americans lose their healthcare and countless others face skyrocketing costs.   That’s why we’ve been fighting all day in DC to stop Trump’s Shutdown.   Unfortunately, our Republican colleagues were nowhere to be found.

Democratic leaders went to negotiate in good faith, but Donald Trump and Republicans have nothing but bad intentions.

Just this morning, Pete Hegseth said the job of the military is to “KILL PEOPLE AND BREAK THINGS.” When Trump sends soldiers into NYC, into LA, into Chicago, and into everywhere else that won’t submit to him and his entourage of fascist freaks, he’s expecting a job well done.

Republicans control the House. They control the Senate. Donald Trump is the president, for heaven’s sake!   If they can’t figure out how to keep the government open before tomorrow night’s deadline, then this shutdown is on their shoulders. No one else’s.

Trump’s weaponization of the Justice Department to prosecute James Comey will not be a one-and-done. This is going to be the rule – not the exception. If we hope to protect any of the freedoms we hold dear, then we CANNOT bend the knee to his authoritarian takeover.

My condolences are with all the families impacted by this heinous, traumatic attack. We cannot continue to go from one week to the next reeling with grief from the latest tragedy in our communities. This has always been a crisis of guns. It can only ever end with gun control.

As we face the great fight for freedom of our day, may we find strength and purpose in these enduring words from Assata Shakur. If there is a single truth in this world, it is that Assata died a free woman. May she rest in power and paradise for all eternity.

Let’s do some math: Trump needs Democratic votes to fund the government… + Trump refuses to negotiate with Democratic leaders to get those votes… = A TRUMP SHUTDOWN.

While the return of Jimmy Kimmel’s show is welcome news, it never should have been taken off the air in the first place. This was a failed attempt by the Trump Administration to censor and silence their critics. Know that they will try again.

Charlie Kirk’s horrific murder was a tragedy, and anyone who says otherwise has no place in public service. However, I will not pretend to respect the harmful ideologies he proudly held, nor will I honor a man who built a career out of dishonoring Americans like me. I voted no.

Trump is hellbent on whitewashing the African American experiences in this country. No matter how many signs or exhibits this administration removes from our nation’s museums or national parks, our history will not be silenced.

Forcing Haitian nationals back into a humanitarian crisis will be a death sentence for many and further destabilize an already desperate situation. This administration’s fight to end TPS for Haiti while its people are gripped by violence and political turmoil is as shortsighted as it is cruel.

As we mark the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, please join me in celebrating our beloved Latino neighbors! Now more than ever, they deserve to know how deeply we value their cultures and contributions. Now more than ever, they deserve to know we will always stand with them.

Donald Trump and the Republican Party are determined to drag this country back to a time when Black voices were shut out of the democratic process. We will not allow it. The stakes are far too high. And this fight is far from over.

The recent threats to our nation’s HBCUs are disturbing and dangerous. Students should be able to attend classes within institutions of higher learning without the fear of becoming targets of retribution or retaliation.

As we pause today to remember the lives lost on #September11th – a day that forever changed our city, our nation, and the way we live – join me in honoring the first responders, families, and communities who experienced unimaginable loss.

Just horrific news. My heart goes out to Charlie’s wife, his children, and all his loved ones in this tragic moment. Our struggle to rid America of the sins of gun violence and political violence must continue. We can only reach a better America if we’re willing to build it.

Political violence is an evil upon our world. It has no place in America, nor any society that strives to be just and decent. No matter your political opinions, this is a dark day for our country. My prayers are with Mr. Kirk, his family, and his loved ones.
