At the same time the NY Times was hyping Hillary Clinton's emails, it had a reporter with emails from Jeffrey Epstein that were highly damaging to Trump. The more NYT apologists try to minimize this the clearer it becomes that they don't understand why much of the public doesn't trust legacy media.

This is a smart column by @mjtoma.bsky.social at the New Republic. Even if Senate Dems have reasonable arguments, the timing is bad. Also they didn't try to message much on _why_ to make a deal. They did it behind closed doors on a Sunday night. It just looks like cowardice and naiveté.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but if the defenders of democracy, human rights, and compassion lose in the short term in the United States, it doesn't mean we are or were wrong. Let's hold onto our moral integrity and each other in these perilous times.

I reiterate while acknowledging that since I first wrote this, "No Kings 2" made history in terms of scale. But my principal point about resistance needing to cohere and increase pressure stands. We need sustained resistance that can mete out economic and political consequences nonviolently.

I've talked before about power struggles within hardening authoritarianism. Usually, regime supporters fight over using rule-of-law in crackdowns (with massive abuses, of course) vs. completely embracing extrajudicial methods. Here, we see the latter dominating. Which is very bad news going forward.

This whole thread is really important to consider when confronted with “media trust” narratives. These narratives tend to assume that only conservative mistrust counts and legitimize the radical propaganda of right-wing media. Also these tend to be “vibe takes” rather than based on good data.

Journalistic malpractice at its finest. Shame on CNN.
