Enmeshment on its own ≠ abuse, and it doesn’t mean anyone is a “bad person.” However, it’s definitely an unhealthy relationship dynamic that needs changing and healing.

Enmeshment means the boundaries need reshaping so both people can have space to be fully themselves. That said, in some cases, abusive dynamics can include enmeshment (i.e. using guilt, dependency, or over-involvement to control). Enmeshment does not automatically mean abuse.

Enmeshment is often about patterns, coping mechanisms, & unconscious family dynamics, not intentional harm. It can happen even in loving relationships. It becomes harmful due to impact: loss of autonomy, emotional fusion, guilt, difficulty making independent choices. Enmeshment on its own ≠ abuse

Enmeshment is when you get so wrapped up emotionally in a relationship with someone that your personal boundaries get blurred or disappear. You get so relationally involved that you both lose your sense of identity & independence. It doesn’t = abuse, but abusive dynamics can definitely include it.
