The pattern doesn't get much better than this for Sierra Nevada snow. A series of storms moving out of the Gulf of Alaska *should* track just long enough over the Pacific to pick up plenty moisture. First storm Tue-Wed before pattern gets cranking Valentines Day. 5-10 feet on table thru ~Feb. 22.

How are we doing on snowfall this season in the Contiguous U.S. through January? Well, it's the lowest combined total thru Jan since 1943-44. While places in the South and East that average 5" to 20" have done pretty well, most everyplace out West (MUCH higher averages), have had little to no snow.

It was 92° today in Escondido. 92! That broke the Feb. 1 record of 84 set just 6 years ago. Also setting records today were Oceanside Harbor (83, topping the previous high of 80 in 1958) & Vista (86, besting the 2003 record of 82). January in San Diego ended up with an average temperature (highs & lows divided by 2) of 59.6°, which is 1.2° above normal. The low was 38° on Jan. 10. The high was 82° on Jan. 31. Total rainfall was 3.10 inches, 1.12 above normal. The wettest day was Jan. 1, with 2.08 inches. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

A pilot just flew through one of the strongest aurora storms in years — and saw the sky explode in color. From the cockpit of a Boeing 787, pilot Matt Melnyk had a view like no one else. Flying at 37,000 feet over Manitoba, he watched as the auroras filled the entire sky.

While we’re trying to handle a little cool cloudiness in San Diego County, a friend in Traverse City, Mich., sends this pic this morning. They got about 6 inches of snow overnight. It’s currently -1 degrees (degree?), and the mercury isn’t expected to reach 20 for the next 8 days.
