Let's talk about sidewalks. Portland needs: - More sidewalks (especially in East Portland) - Sidewalks not to have obstructions in the middle of them - Sidewalks to be maintained and free of debris That is a bare minimum. We all deserve safe ways to get around our community.

Parker and I made our first visit to the ICE facility today; very quiet. Chatted with a veteran who has lived here for 35 years. Asked why he was there, he said "I believe in due process and they're not respecting that." Also said Portland needs to invest more in East Portland (he's right on both!)

The City of Portland's Gov. Relations team gave an update to Portland City Council today on developing their state legislative agenda for the upcoming short session. One area of advocacy still in development: "Portland's interest in having the Portland Trail Blazers here for the long term." (1/4)

The role of City Council in this new form of government was limited; as a former City staffer, that is a good thing. Their role is now (largely) to budget. Council controls the purse. It's hard to imagine a legit reason not to share with them that there were tens of millions of additional dollars.

This is the woman who was killed by a car in my neighborhood recently. A sign left by her house says it all: "The system was never broken. It was built this way." We have designed our streets to kill people to get us to the store four minutes faster. It's our responsibility to undo that.
