Assassinating the people you’re negotiating a ceasefire with in the country that is serving as the neutral negotiator is exactly the kind of self-destruction that will end Israel.

Solidarity to the

Emancipation Day. The post from the PM. People were enslaved in Canada, that's why we talk about Emancipation Day on August 1. Depersonalizing it by citing the British Empire is weak. I still laugh that folks don't understand why the 1834 Foundation is called the 1834 Foundation in Canada. 1/

Canadian exceptionalism is just a different flavour of U.S. exceptionalism. Canadian history is as laced with injustice and human rights abuses as that in the U.S. - there is a reason Canadian mining companies are so hated globally. "We're better than the U.S." is not an identity, folks. Nor honest.

The university can’t be neutral. The university has never been a neutral place. Let’s pop that balloon right away. Refuse that bad fiction of the western university. It has been the site for the production of tremendous harm through “knowledge”.

Just because your personal freedoms are being threatened for the first time, doesn’t mean that this is the first time personal freedoms have been threatened. Behaving in this manner undermines relationships with individuals & groups that have been living with this palpable fear for generations.

"No Other Land," the Palestinian-Israeli made film showing the destruction of the occupied West Bank's Masafer Yatta by Israeli soldiers, just won the Oscar for Best Documentary. It can't get a distributor in the US. Which tells you everything about censorship in the US.

It's always been the case that "buying" an ebook from amazon was only actually a loan they could rescind at any point, but lately Amazon have gone harder on this, and it is 100% so that they can wipe banned books from your libraries without your consent. Buy direct from authors. Get your files.

I remain deeply uncomfortable with the "stick a maple leaf on everything" approach to Canadian unity against American fascism. I understand the the flag-waving and anthem-singing serve a function with the general population, but they're also misleading. I want us to stay critical of our own state.

Doing an MFA in 2025 is trying to write your little gay stories in one tab while planning a hypothetical road trip home across four provinces without the aid of gas stations or cell phones in another. Which act is more delusional?

One of the best things you can do right now is read books. Buy them. Borrow them from the library. Gift them. Read history. Read fiction. Read science writing. Read anything that shows you the world is bigger than what fascists say it is. Read to remember why your resistance matters. 📚💙

I don't know how I would survive without writing. It's the only thing where I feel like I have any control, power, or visibility. Now is a great time to cultivate and nurture the things that do this for you. It's okay to let the world bring you down, just don't let it keep you down.

Today’s micro book review:
@zoewhittall.bsky.social
’s Wild Failure kept me company on a red eye from YYZ to YHZ last night. There’s so much of what Whittall does best in these stories: queer ennui, hazy 90s nostalgia, characters you can instantly inhabit and invest in. A brisk, punchy read.
