RIP to Jonathan Tiersten, aka, Ricky from the cult classic slasher, "Sleepaway Camp." He passed away today at 60 yrs old. Cause of death unknown, but will know shortly via medical examiner. Absolutely iconic line, "Eat shit and live, Bill!" Def rewatching this gem tonight in honor of Ricky.

Finally got around to watching Skinamarink. Yeesh, what a disturbing film. I know there are competing theories re: what it's about, but I immediately thought of childhood trauma & domestic abuse. The experimental aspect of the cinematography was compelling, but that's a one-and-done watch for me.

While we posted an ep for Black History Month ("Sinners"), we also had a backup in the can, which listeners can now hear! We chopped up the 1972 blaxploitation classic, "Blacula," starring William Marshal (an opera singer, Shakespearean actor). We paired that w/ Wes Craven's "Vampire in Brooklyn."

This year marks the 40th anniversary of "April Fool's Day," a smart faux-slasher w/ a great twist ending. This '80s flick upends genre tropes & subverts audience expectations. Plus, it's super funny, has creative kills, & boasts a loaded cast. Ck out our PRIME CUTS #12, where we chop this gem up.

Rewatching "The Blair Witch Project." Brilliant idea, so original. Aside from the urban lore & mythmaking aspect, the marketing was genius. "Curse of the Blair Witch" was a faux-documentary that aired months before the theatrical release. It blurred the lines of reality & fiction so well.

The CIU crew teamed w/ @finalgirlspodcast.bsky.social to discuss the atmospheric arthouse horror movie, "Messiah of Evil." Watching it feels like walking into someone else's dream. The color palette & set pieces are gorgeous, & it scans like a Lovecraft/Fellini hybrid. Listen now via all services!

"Blair Witch Project" is up next! Filmed in our hometown in Gaithersburg, MD, much of the footage comes from Seneca State Park, where the actors were only given a rough outline of what was to happen. The reactions were authentic fear and confusion. A seminal found footage flick; coming soon!

Spooky season is upon us! Highly suggest checking out the 1988 cheese-classic Halloween horror flick, "Hack-o-Lantern." Hy Pyke gives a performance for the ages as a Satan-worshipping grandpa set on corrupting his grandson. So much nonsense: gratuitous nudity, non sequitars, & overacting galore.

Just watched first ep of the horror series "Marianne" on Netflix. Holy jeezus. Terrifying and unsettling. This is compelling horror with a deft touch by someone who knows how to do horror right. Only one jump scare in the first ep and still had me on the edge of my seat. Worth a watch for sure.
