Today is a good day to remind people that it is an order of magnitude safer to travel by train than by car.

A train has derailed near to Shap in Cumbria in northern England after it struck a landslide. Fortunately, it remained upright, so there is no loss of life. Some people have suffered minor injuries. www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cz...

Almost home after 10 days on the road in Europe talking geothermal energy. Nice to finish it seeing some drill rigs and pumping tests for a new aquifer thermal energy storage system.

Last week I stood atop Paglia Orba. Known as the Matterhorn of Corsica, although obviously much much easier else I would not have been there. It felt like the beginning of the end of five months of struggle, in which I have had few adventures to share on here.

Had an unexpected stab of sorrow today. Realised it was the anniversary of VJ day. 80 yrs to the day since my mum was concieved as my grandparents celebrated the end of the war. Born mid May the following year. She would have been 79 now, but passed away 10 years ago. Miss her still.

It's no exaggeration to say that heating will determine whether the UK can meet its climate obligations over the next few years. We've made some progress over the last year, but there is a daunting amount still to do...

Just returning from a few days in Bochum, Germany, learning about progress towards underground thermal energy storage. The last German hard coal mine closed in 2018, so using mine cavities for sustainable heat potentially represents an exciting new phase for areas such as these.

All-Energy take two. After rail lines closed last night due to fire I am on the first LNER going north this morning. Anyone else is Glasgow today?

This. We will not have an energy transition without addressing infrastructure: transport (railways, metros, trams) for modal shift from cars, district heating network construction, wind turbines, grid transition & distribution investments for increased renewable electricity, energy storage etc.

Technology can be incredibly useful. It can also lead to down-skilling. I worry about AI in this respect too. Sometimes there is no substitute for thinking about things for oneself.

You can't out right the right. You need to actually invest in services and yes infrastructure that will make people's lives better. This includes the energy transition that will create jobs, and transport so people can get to them.

Oh dear. Heat pumps are an energy efficiency device. If they are controversial it is only because too much of the media, lobby, and political class is taking money and influence from corporations who want us to use more energy (typically fossil fuels) not less. Its no wonder we are in such a mess.

I just knew that there must be a catch with the good weather forecsst for a rare staycation. Its looks like it might be too windy for our ferry!

Well, we all survived another @constructionarium.bsky.social week. Our students were awesome, building Canary Wharf and North Greenwich stations, Milau Viaduct, and Kingsgate Footbridge. A massive well done to everyone. Now for some well earnt sleeping all round.

For Day 4 I have found @constructionarium.bsky.social on Bluesky. Its been another manic day with huge amounts of progress and everything set up for the finalle tomorrow. And the sun shone. 🌞

Constructionarium Day 3. More concrete pours of piers and foundation, piles driven, and station boxes excavated and supported. Excellent progress all round. And Sunshine 🌞.

Constructionarium Day 2. We have: one pier and one abutment pad cast on Milau; the bridge decks cask on Kingsgate: Canary Wharf roof panels made and excavation started. A good day. Cold this afternoon, but still no rain.

Its Constructionarium Time! For those new followers since moving to Bluesky, this is where our 3rd yr students get to build cut down versions of actual structures: Milau Viaduct; Kingsgate Bridge & Canary Wharf Station. Its the end of day 1 and lots of great progress and importantly no rain!

All the grey this morning is making me even more grateful for the sunshine coming on the weekend for once!

A great weekend largely escaping from work, international politics, and the cricket scores. Another 150m of new cave mapped on Sat, and beat the forecast to cloud free hill tops today. Cave now approaching 9km long. And now some exciting new plans brewing too.

Which is why we need more ground source heat pumps, not just air source heat pumps. And why we also need heat storage underground. All increase the efficiency of our thermal energy system.
