Waiting on the judgment day
My appetite for movies has faded quite a bit since July but I am still making my way through Scorsese. Tonight was Hugo. Some screenplay and pacing issues but that ending sure does work on me.

Only thing I can say about One Battle After Another is that it is an all-timer. Too much was done too well and it demands to be seen.

Watched Panic Room for the first time in probably 15+ years. I don't remember it being that good. There is something very satisfying about B plot-movies with A+-craft.

This Mariners-Astros series is gonna make for a nerve-wracking weekend. Couldn't ask for a much more exciting setup though: tied for first and a 3-game series on the way.

Yeah....that really is a good list. I'm surprised because I'm an elitist snob.

A great thing about the internet is that a good-natured joke post like this can lead to the, holy shit duh realization that conmen are one of the strongest through lines in Wesβ filmography, reaffirming that in so many ways, the artifice really is the point.

Heathcliff and Catherine get buried next to each other with the adjacent sides of their coffins taken out. They get buried in a makeshift double bed! They were horny in their literal grave! The misreading/misunderstanding of texts is getting dangerously out of hand.

Working my job on Labor Day is great because I can get a lot done...no distractions. So I made it a half day and now I'm starting September with The Departed, continuing my chronological Scorsese rewatch.

Sometimes I want a specific type of movie: under two hours, fun, light. Then I can't think of anything off the top of my head so I scan my collection until one jumps out. Today was one of those days. The perfect enjoyable film that jumped out: Knight and Day Fun!

On the occasion of its 50th anniversary, I am excited to see Jaws on the big screen. I am more excited that I am going with my 15 and 13 year old nieces, who will be seeing Jaws for the first time. I really hope they love it. Or are at least scared in the fun movie way of being scared.

Been neglecting my Criterion Channel queue so had a first watch of Joseph Losey's Mr Klein, starring Alain Delon. A brilliant thriller. Made in 1976 but very timely in our moment.

I think I'm going to have to rewatch Alien Earth. I've fallen asleep during every episode. I know what's happening but I am missing way too much about what this is all about.

Rewatch of The Aviator tonight. The biggest surprise so far during my Scorsese rewatch project. A stunning film. Enormously entertaining. An expertly crafted film in most every respect. Some of the CGI does look dated now but that's a very minor quibble. Much better than I'd remembered.

Tough call between Trading Places, A Fish Called Wanda, True Lies, and Everything Everywhere All at Once. I think The Bear is my actual favorite performance of hers.

Scorsese rewatch continues with Gangs of New York. I've seen it several times and always thought very highly of it. Has been a top 10 Scorsese picture for me. We'll see how it hits me this time.

Haven't been feeling well for a while. Anything even semi-chronic is new for me so this has been an ordeal. Haven't even felt like watching films. But tonight I need an easy, enjoyable, comfortable film so Ocean's Eleven it is.

Watched Bringing Out the Dead. An underrated entry in Scorsese's filmography. A return to his 70s style and mostly reminiscent of After Hours, but with much more depth. The Divine Comedy with no Virgil.

I really liked Eddington. Very funny. A cool genre shift part way through. Great lead performance. A lot going on and walks a tightrope quite well.

The redeeming quality of all Adam Sandler movies is that you can tell the people in it are having a good time. That's not nothing. Also, his movies are perfect for streaming. Anyway, Happy Gilmore 2 was fun enough. Got a couple big laughs out of me.

Revisited Kundun for my Scorsese rewatch. A fascinating entry in his filmography, mostly because his protagonist never seems that conflicted about embracing his moral center. It's a very good film. Never feels as long as it is due in large part to an incredible Philip Glass score.
