Where did this idea that placeholder art must look like shit come from. The point of placeholder art is to accomplish its goal (layout, lighting, playtest, etc) with the minimal effort possible. No part of that is “also needs to look terrible” (sometimes that would even breaks its goal).

An interesting thread and instead of cluttering it - I think the conversation misses the mark. Invest in 5 games. 4 will fail. So the math is - 1 needs to have enough upside to cover the other 4. This is why mid sized publishers vanished, games that don't sale these days don't kinda not sell...

When major issues would come up at the end of a game project I would always half-joke that we just need to find the right Unity checkbox. The number of times that was actually the solve was shockingly high.

My biggest takeaway from GDC this year was a big change on using AI in game development. Majority of studios I talked to were actively using it. Big changes on the engineering side over the last few months. Fever is starting to break, could finally talk to people about what it is actually good at.

GDC done and it was a great one! Got to have so many wonderful conversations with so many amazing people.

I was joking yesterday about how long before Just-In-Time Software exists. I guess that is coming.

The transition away from manually writing code is going to be a seismic change. Bigger than most understand and will happen more quickly. In the end it will be great, moving up the abstraction ladder. Enabling us to solve bigger problems more quickly.

In the short-term there is still lots of value in deep understanding of code. Spotting issues, debugging, understand domain specifics. But that to will go away. In university I was told to learn assembly because how would I write good high level code without that knowledge. Spoiler not important #AI

Any programmer that thinks they will be writing most code manually outside of narrow domains in 2 years time is mistaken.
