The cover design by Antony Maitland on the 1971 Puffin paperback publication is iconic. His artwork also graced almost all of the Leon Garfield historical novels, including 'Jack Holborn', another masterpiece I can't recommend highly enough. He really was superlative.

I loved C S Lewis, I loved Leon Garfield, I loved 'Stig Of The Dump', I enjoyed Alan Garner and I loved Susan Cooper. But above all of them was John Gordon's 'The Giant In The Snow' (1968). Original, suspenseful, terrifying, it remains a masterpiece of what I now know as #FolkHorror. #BookWormSat

I propose that, as From Friday, the 8th of May should be known as Attenborough Day. It should be a bank holiday where the public are encouraged to take part in conservation work or state funded educational sessions promoting the natural world.
