The only flaw in the narrative of The Day of the Triffids is the UK would be immune, as whenever there is interesting celestial phenomena it’s pissing down with rain and overcast.

My tiny H R Wakefield collection (the rest are on Kindle). Left to right: 1934 print of the 1932 first edition; 1961 Ballantine paperback with Richard Powers cover; and a 1935 first edition. For me Wakefield is in the top 5 of ghost story writers.

Alan Garner is 91 today. A brilliant and unique author. His books have inspired and enchanted me since I read The Weirdstone of Brisingamen at the age of 11. Here is my treasured copy of Red Shift. The Le Guin quote on the cover is wholly accurate.

What was so special about a 1970s karate chop? It seemed to be able to instantly knock out all types of villain (not all human) when administered by practically anyone!

Greatly saddened by this. Here is a glimpse of John Woodbine, excellent as always, as the sinister leader of the Knights of God.

The BBC are broadcasting a 5 part adaptation of the very strange novel Hothouse by Brian Aldiss. In the far future, a banyan tree covers the Earth. Humans struggle with carnivorous plants & insects & telepathic fungi. Expertly read by Rog Blake. Well worth a listen.

Why do stormtroopers wear so much armour when it is so useless? It seems to be ineffective against a blaster, which is used by most people in the Star Wars universe. It would be ok if someone was throwing stones!

Many thanks to anyone who chooses to share this. These are the last of the 53000+ books I bought from my ex-publisher Unbound earlier this year, after they stopped paying me and I took my rights back. We have 200-300 left and Jim would love to clear a bit of space in his room (he is very large).
