The Government has just announced the first of their ‘nine new river walks’: a section of the River Mersey. Whilst we commend any new access, this is giving us the Boxing Day scraps, and is not the ambitious access legislation we have been promised.

Kernow showed up in force for river access last weekend. Twenty people gathered near Bodmin to trespass a stretch of the River Camel, while another seven walked the full 20 miles of the Camel Trail to highlight the inadequacy of the government’s proposed nine river walks.

You’ve seen the signs: ‘Trespassers Will Be Prosecuted’. They lie. In the UK ‘trespass’ is a civil offence, not a criminal one. You cannot face prosecution simply for being on someone’s land, off a designated Right of Way, open access land, or land where bylaws permit access, without permission.

Yesterday (November 16th), a group of walkers, wild swimmers, canoeists and river guardians went to explore a stretch of the River Avon. Flowing from source (The Vale of Pewsey) to sea (Christchurch), the Avon is a rare and important chalk stream habitat.

Our North West Local Group set out on a trespass walk along the River Bollin, rambling through town, woodland, water, and fields. Along the way, they visited a woodland microenclosure watched over by CCTV cameras, and later took to the river for a paddle.

Seventeen walkers joined Norfolk Right to Roam for a two-mile autumn walk beside the River Wensum. The route followed an ancient public path through oak woodland, past former gravel pits now rich in wildlife, before looping back through meadows and woods beside the river.

Our Land, a new documentary, interrogates the connections between land, power and a sense of belonging following the Right to Roam movement in England and Wales. It captures the tension between public campaigners fighting for greater access to nature and landowners.

The River Dart trespass was undertaken by our South Devon group, where they met at Galmpton before trespassing in the Waddeton Court and Sandridge Barton Estates, the latter of which is owned by a company registered in the Cayman Islands.

3/ As we found on our trespass along the River Dart today, plenty of landowners have already created private walks along the river. The physical infrastructure is already there. But outdated trespass laws mean the public has no right of access. Let's create a right of responsible access in England
