The government must know this line is nonsense. Yet still keep repeating it. Nine river walks & three forests won't change the postcode lottery on access to nature. Even where these initiatives are happening they're so far only upgrading the existing infrastructure, not creating new access at all.

Today 25 of us went trespassing along the River Dart near Buckfast. In just 5km we walked through woodlands and along riverbanks owned by 4 different landowners who don't want the public on their land (including the monks at Buckfast Abbey). It's time for a right to roam! @righttoroam.bsky.social

A den is a childish statement of belonging, but let’s not mistake childish for trivial. Den making is the instinctive behaviour of homemaking: collecting materials from the world around, as you work out what can be borrowed, salvaged and adapted into shelter. Nearly everyone has built a den.

This spring sees the release of a documentary about the fight to defend and extend access to nature in England and Wales. OUR LAND, directed by Orban Wallace and shot by Gallivant Film, follows the Right to Roam campaign as we trespass estates and challenge removal of rights on Dartmoor and beyond.

We are delighted to be part of this exhibition at @themerl.bsky.social, with the fight for Dartmoor's right to Wild Camp and the resurection of Old Crockern. On 14th February - 24th of May, not one to miss!

Rope swings are inevitable: if nature and climate have conspired together to create a tree whose bows offer the perfect height for a swing, in a location looking over a river or steep slope, at some point in time one will appear.

Good web conference on recreational disturbance issues in the outdoors today. Lots of common ground, still some philosophical gulfs to bridge. A few takeaways. -the reason many of our protected SSSIs exist is *because* the land was originally protected for access. That's why the two often overlap.

Wherever there’s a sacred spring, there’s a good chance a clootie tree existed next to it. For centuries people have visited healing waters and tied a rag (‘clootie’) belonging to a sick loved one to the branches of a nearby tree. When the rag disintegrates, it’s hoped the loved one will be healed.

How to trespass: It often doesn’t come naturally - we’re conditioned to stick to paths, obey signs, and respect boundaries. We’re going back to basics to share core principles for roaming respectfully and interacting with the world around you with care.

The Government has just announced the first of their ‘nine new river walks’: a section of the River Mersey. Whilst we commend any new access, this is giving us the Boxing Day scraps, and is not the ambitious access legislation we have been promised.

This past weekend saw the last of our river trespasses organised by our amazing Local Groups. The past month has seen 10 river trespasses take place across England - demanding greater access to our waterways, and pointing out that the Government’s pledge of a mere 9 river walks is inadequate.

Kernow showed up in force for river access last weekend. Twenty people gathered near Bodmin to trespass a stretch of the River Camel, while another seven walked the full 20 miles of the Camel Trail to highlight the inadequacy of the government’s proposed nine river walks.

You’ve seen the signs: ‘Trespassers Will Be Prosecuted’. They lie. In the UK ‘trespass’ is a civil offence, not a criminal one. You cannot face prosecution simply for being on someone’s land, off a designated Right of Way, open access land, or land where bylaws permit access, without permission.

Yesterday (November 16th), a group of walkers, wild swimmers, canoeists and river guardians went to explore a stretch of the River Avon. Flowing from source (The Vale of Pewsey) to sea (Christchurch), the Avon is a rare and important chalk stream habitat.

Our North West Local Group set out on a trespass walk along the River Bollin, rambling through town, woodland, water, and fields. Along the way, they visited a woodland microenclosure watched over by CCTV cameras, and later took to the river for a paddle.

Founded in 1907 to defend landowners’ interests, the CLA has fought against every major push to open up the countryside. From blocking early footpath reforms to opposing today’s right to roam movement, the CLA has stood on the wrong side of public access for over a century.
