Needing to look up some references in my book but going back to the dissertation pdf instead because I don't want to accidentally discover any typos.

I'm in the relatively fortunate position of having had almost continuous research funding since my PhD but even so, I've never been able to plan any project with a secure time horizon of more than 2-3 years. It means you limit your ambitions, rush outputs, forgo collaborations. Basically it sucks.

Another bit of Halloween reading that I was very happy to pick up for 1€ since I've been on the lookout for a while: Gustav Meyrink's The White Dominican (1921). Lots of esoteric transmigration-of-the-soul stuff cobbled up with vague early-20thC European notions of Buddhism.

Going through someone's copyedits on a text of mine and they've just casually replaced "nineteenth century" with "twentieth century" without comment. Those were pretty different, actually! I'm something of an expert.

Turns out this was maybe an issue with the default Aptos font getting corrupted, possibly related to the file being on a cloud drive. Fixable by just changing the font.

This looks fascinating, seems like an interesting outgrowth of the sort of 'industrial' nineteenth-century tourism that made mines into tourist destinations. Or, indeed, tea/coffee/etc plantations in Southeast Asia, as I discuss in my book.

Country #76 of my Cooking Round the World challenge is ICELAND 🇮🇸 Plokkfiskur is boiled whitefish (I used cod) & mashed potatoes mixed together with milk, flour, & sautéed onions. Served with dark rye & butter, plus a Scandinavian cucumber salad dressed in white vinegar, sugar, salt, & fresh dill.

Two essays in the pipeline now that will cement my reputation as a public intellectual devoted to critiquing current Finnish politics by reference to Southeast Asian history. You've got to find your niche, you know.

Nobel discourse today is just silly so some more thoughts on Seiobo There Below. I love this book for a couple of reasons. One is that it's so blatantly *about* a big concept (beauty) and goes about examining it in such rich, unexpected ways that you truly feel like you've learned something new.
