This is a really great thread. Amnesty documented some issues with hate speech during the conflict although on Meta rather than twitter. As more people join Bluesky so important to have conversations about how to combat disinformation and hate speech that can further fuel conflict.

A lot of the tweets were the same, copy pasta, prepared content uploaded to the pro government unityforethiopia dot net website (now down). A lot of it was vile and misogynist harassment of journalists such as CNN's Nima Elbagir who did so much critical coverage of Tigray. It's all we saw for weeks

In response to Amnesty International’s earth-shattering report, and the scores of media reports that came shortly after, the Ethiopian government and its supporters mobilized to depict the reports as complete fabrications. One of the primary tools used for pushing Axum massacre denial, was Twitter.

The hashtags trended widely in Ethiopian circles. People in Tigray generally had no idea what was going on online, with their internet access completely severed. But elsewhere in Ethiopia, the campaign pushed the idea that all news coverage was fake and meant to defame Ethiopia.

It whipped up a fascist frenzy. Axum massacre denial was mainstream. It was popular and ubiquitous. Everyone, including this University professor in New York who went on state media to do it, had no problem openly peddling it, because there were no consequences anywhere. No one knew enough or cared.

I was about to go to bed, when I saw this thread. I beg you all to read it. I will be contributing my own mini case study on systematic SBV tomorrow, I hope. And then one on weaponized starvation. They will not be as good as this one though, the guy is a genius.

The newspapers were no slouches either. The biggest English language state newspaper, Ethiopian Herald put out an editorial in their paper and all their online platforms, calling on people to tweet 45 prepared tweets pushing Axum massacre denialism. (Only sharing English content for this thread)

Then, on Feb 26th 2021, Amnesty Intl published a blockbuster report using OSINT methods. Having located scores of displaced survivors in refugee camps and amassing satellite imagery which depicted the sudden emergence of huge mass graves in the city, they confirmed a horrible massacre took place.

But as survivors displaced from Axum fled to Sudan & regained internet access, testimony of what they had seen began to make the rounds. Still, a conflict data entity which describes itself as the "highest quality real time data source" was confident enough to tweet this (later retracted & deleted)
