The bill enacts sweeping changes to American health care that would devastate Medicaid. It incorporates previously failed “work requirements” and stricter state restrictions, and cuts Medicaid funding by over $1 trillion, threatening coverage for nearly 12 million Americans Courts and observers agree these policy changes would lead to millions losing health insurance, and thousands of preventable deaths every year. Additionally, the Congressional Budget Office estimates that about 10.9 million fewer people could have health coverage, with 8 million fewer enrolled in Medicaid alone by the end of the decade. The bill’s supporters argue that these changes combat “waste, fraud, and abuse,” but analysis from nonpartisan experts shows that most adult Medicaid recipients are already working, and much of the coverage reduction results from paperwork issues, not fraud. This threatens access to essential care, especially in rural areas, where hospitals and communities rely heavily on Medicaid funding. We understand the need for fiscal discipline, but slashing health coverage for millions is not the solution. The public—including in traditionally Republican areas—overwhelmingly supports preserving or expanding Medicaid . The bill also worsens economic inequality: it extends tax breaks favoring the wealthy while imposing healthcare harm on low-income and rural families. For these reasons, I strongly urge you to: Oppose any final passage of the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.” Protect Medicaid from any work requirements, copays, or barriers that would reduce coverage.
