Phyllis Merhige was one of the highest ranking women ever in Major League Baseball, and across all major professional sports. She retired in 2016 as the Senior Vice President for Club Relations and leading director of all MLB official scorers.

At 5’3”, Mamie “Peanut” Johnson got her nickname after striking out Negro Leagues legend Hank Bayliss, who joked she was “no bigger than a peanut.” One of only three women to play in the Negro Leagues—and the only pitcher—she went 33–8 for the Indianapolis Clowns. ⚾

The Cleveland Buckeyes were a Negro league baseball team that played from 1942 to 1950 in the Negro American League. In 1945, Buckeyes swept then back-to-back champions the Homestead Grays to earn the title of Negro American League World Series champions.

Frank Robinson devoted his life to baseball. Over 21 seasons he played for 5 teams, ending his career in Cleveland where he was the first Black manager in big-league history, as the player-manager of the Indians. He was also the first player to be named MVP of both the NL & AL.
