YES. A good plot twist usually feels obvious in hindsight, without giving everything away right away. Make your audience feel smarter for having figured it out!

This is also why I hate mystery box stories. We don't get mad because expectations are "subverted". We get mad because mystery box stories are made to create speculation first, without an answer that was deliberately built up to. They're like train tracks that lead off a cliff, without a bridge.

This is fair. I mainly take issue with how theory culture overcomplicates and misses the point of media. Too often it focuses too hard on piecing together a puzzle, rather than the appreciating whole picture and what it's saying; the "no meaning, only lore" idea that killed Twin Peaks for 25 years.

FNAF was the best when it was just a simple ghost story about a child murderer. No remnant, no complicated Afton family BS, no Bite of 87/83 debate. The focus was so much clearer early on, and then it just got so, SO needlessly complicated.

Should clarify that it's more "theory culture" that I take issue with over theories themselves. Theories can be fun but, when encouraged too much, they can often miss the point of media when it's not about the "deep lore" of things and more about simpler, more universal themes of a story.

Theories and "expectations" have had a nasty impact on culture. They just set people up to get mad when the story the artist tells doesn't line up with whatever people imagined based off "patterns" that don't really mean anything. Wait for the end, enjoy the ride, and let a story be what it is.
