A lot of us are wondering what we can do to support our colleagues at NSF and NIH. Here’s something you can do: when they ask you to serve on a panel, say yes. Even if you’re too busy (you are). Even if it feels under-compensated (it is), just say yes. Make one thing easier for them.

I remember the first time I saw a grant of mine had moved from “recommended” to “awarded.” I took a screen cap, as if it would prevent anyone from someone taking it back. I still have that picture on my phone. Today, I did the same thing, because today I might have just slayed a jabberwocky.

Indeed. When they rounded up the Japanese Americans, myself and my family included, for internment during WWII out of fear over Japanese spies and saboteurs, two thirds of us were U.S. citizens. Don’t think it won’t happen again when they come for the “undocumented.”
