I had an engagement with blogger, failed California gubernatorial candidate, and self-identified reporter Michael Shellenberger this past week, which started out being about this new paper being heralded by climate skeptics as disproving global sea-level acceleration. (LONG 🧵)

This also surprised me quite a bit. Was observed all over the area to some degree. May need a ‘wildfire’ parameter on your Boreal cosmo ages! Hah

Fire-induced rock spalling! This area burnt about 1-2 months ago. All of the little rock shards on the ground are spalled pieces of the granite boulder, overlying burnt soil and moss. Before seeing this in person, I didn't really consider the mechanical weathering effects of fire!

😳 FFS! I worked in these areas, on the ground, at elevations not much higher than this about 8-10 years ago. Not any more, apparently. This is... concerning. Jeezus. (My head swims with hydrology questions about this. My PhD research drains into high-elevation crevasses like this.)

Unbelievable experience with the journal Palaeo3. Our manuscript was rejected because… they couldn’t find a second reviewer, and it had been in their system “too long” (7 weeks), according to the editor. In other words, just to preserve their review-speed metrics, they rejected our submission.
