July was the smokiest month on record in Winnipeg with 189 hours of smoke at the Airport. Temperatures were average, but it was much drier than normal. It was also the driest January to July on record at the Airport with 126mm of precip. Normal is close to 300mm

The fire situation in northwest Manitoba is nuts. Hard to comprehend the scale of these blazes. Every red dot is an active fire within the last 1-3 hrs. Only going to get worse with a balmy 28C and gusts up to 40 km/h tomorrow with more lightning to follow. Lynn Lake, Leaf Rapids evacuated.

Gauthier et al (@mtrommelen.bsky.social) present a detailed analysis of the glacial and environmental history of MIS 3 (29-57 thousand years ago) sediments in southern Manitoba, Canada. For much of MIS 3, this location was occupied by Proglacial Lake Vita. ⚒️🦣🧪 🧵 doi.org/10.1017/qua....

This was a fun study. Neat area just east of the Red River ice stream preserving MIS 3 aged sediments less than a metre below ground surface. Combing this study with on-going work in the HBL work indicates that the MIS 3 LIS margin was situated somewhere on the Canadian Shield - more to come.

New paper alert! We use till stratigraphy, pollen and optical dating to figure out that the Laurentide Ice Sheet stayed close to southern Manitoba during MIS. It did not significantly retreat, as has been previously hypothesized.
