The FDA has approved Suchi Saria’s AI-powered early warning system to detect sepsis, one of the deadliest infections for hospital patients, a regulatory first that shifts what the standard of care can be for a condition associated with roughly 1 in 3 in-hospital deaths.

JHU CS’ Anton Dahbura says phishing attacks are getting more sophisticated & convincing with AI. And a new large language model is particularly good at spotting cyber vulnerabilities. “The systems that we rely on are really like Swiss cheese when it comes to the potential for cyberattacks,” he says.

“The Canvas breach is a reminder that no platform is immune: There are countless systems that remain attractive targets for bad actors,” says JHU CS’ Anton Dahbura. “Educational platforms are particularly rich targets given the concentration of personal, financial, and international student data.”

Computer scientists including @danielkhashabi.bsky.social, @aliu33.bsky.social, and @mikeschatz.bsky.social have proved that in-context learning is a general capability that emerges whenever a large AI model is trained to predict the next element with ANY sufficiently complex sequence data.

JHU CS’ Yinzhi Cao says universities can increase protections from attacks by raising cyber awareness, providing only necessary information to third parties such as Canvas, and conducting routine internal tests to ensure that everything is secure.

“Using the same username across platforms can make it easier for hackers to conceptually link a person to multiple accounts, although it’s not guaranteed,” says JHU CS’ Anton Dahbura, who emphasizes that password practices are far more consequential in real-world attacks.

“The dependency of so many educational institutions on Canvas is certainly a systemic risk,” says JHU CS’ Anton Dahbura. “Therefore, colleges should require stronger security measures plus resilience plans and alternatives for instruction during outages.”

An early warning system for sepsis has been approved for use by @fda.gov, one of the first AI-based medical tools to get clearance. Developed by @jhu.edu researchers, the tool detects sepsis hours faster than doctors and has reduced deaths by nearly 20%.

Our @matthewdgreen.bsky.social is on the hook to pay if a shared secret from X25519—a widely used elliptic curve algorithm—is recovered from a pair of public points on the curve, whether through classical or quantum means.
