In Canada, we have free & fair elections because of the role played by the federal government. The voting is standardised for every riding, tightly run by Elections Canada, all ballots are paper and pencil, no electronic ones that can be hacked or stolen. Campaigns are short and spending is limited.

And no need for the Electoral College.

Canadian voters have time off to vote. Gerrymandering is virtually impossible. Elections run for 37 to 51 days. Spending by parties, candidates, and third parties is strictly limited. Most candidates spend less than they are allowed to do.

we wouldn't have state governments creating ID laws and then selectively deciding which ID can be used (gun licenses OK, no to student IDs), we would have mail in ballots for anyone who requests it, we would have a sufficient amount of polling places for a population...
