Ausencia: a series of 9 lithographs created at La Máquina in Oaxaca. After completing the print, I gradually erased the drawing to underscore the fact that both the Mayan stingless bee (Melipona beeicheii) and the vanilla orchid are currently endangered due to environmental impact.

We were in Los Angeles for the LéaLA book fair a few years back. I was walking down César Chávez Boulevard with my husband Francisco and fellow writer Benito Taibo when a woman in front of us spun around and screamed, "Why can't you speak American?!"

As a first generation city slicker who helped edit and publish her grandmother's memoir of South Dakota during the Great Depression era-- this absolutely tracks and I am so glad someone finally is pointing it out. Traditional farm life was brutally hard! Everyone worked their fingers to the bone!

A lovely excerpt from The Genius of Trees by Harriet Rix portraying our relationship to these amazing plants as something that stretches far beyond our current notion of a natural resource subject to human destruction... can't wait to read the book.

The genius of trees: how forests have shaped humanity, from chocolate cravings to our ability to dream
Since our early ancestors came down from the canopy, we may think we have learned how to live without trees. But our lives remain intertwined in incredible ways
