Unfortunately, he is correct. Use of Gen AI is already adopted in many major studios. BUT I think hiding behind “everyone’s doing it” is a beyond lame and shitty excuse. We should be collectively fighting against the normalization of this tech being integrated in our pipeline.

Echoing Meg here, this AI pressure is 100% going on behind the scenes. It sucks, but it isn't an excuse. He knew AI is displacing union artists but figured people like him can't be replaced, and that he's well-liked enough to get away with it.

One last AI thing before the day’s over: I remember being approached by a company to train Ai with my boards (which was kind of a compliment that I didn’t understand) but my main question that they couldn’t answer is “why would I train AI to do what I do. I do what I do. Why would I give that up?”

This really is it, this is the part that keeps me raging against the machine. Busy and tired day trying to make good art with good people, get home and check the animation news and yiiiiiikes.

Any time a creative turns to this tech, they are saying "I do not respect the people who do this thing. I do not value their creative contribution to my vision. I think they are so worthless, they can be replaced by the machine that ate their work." It's not surprising this is seen as hostile.

Today I saw Jorge Gutierrez, Hayk Manukyan, and Tom Bancroft all defending AI in animation. So fucking disappointed (although I already knew Bancroft was shitty. Still haven’t forgotten his long-deleted post about being anti women’s choice)

Sounds about right. Maybe he does understand what he's erasing when he says something like this, even if he doesn't know it lol 😒

I'm gonna need animation journalism to start following the $$$ please. Literally nothing you have to report would be as interesting as how things are financed. Those numbers tell us "the why" of a story almost every time. So if, say, someone sold out. For how much?
