My controversial take is that if you didn't get credited on a game you have proof you've worked on, just list it on your CV. I do with one. Never had any issues. Not being credited still sucks but you don't need to be polite when they're not.

One curious thing that helped me a lot in my freelance career is knowing a lot of other freelancers. Being able to tell people "I'm not the most suitable person for this, but I know a guy/gal/pal who is" is a great way to present yourself as reliable and considerate, which'll take you very far
