Adopteehood is living in limbo. My identity comes from my adoptive family. This body comes from my bio family. And, I happen to live in a place that privileges the biological. It's a place that ever more fiercely wants to locate identity in the biological (gender to sex, citizenship to blood/soil).

Lots of chatter lately about citizenship, adopteehood, and birth certificates. Long story short: lots of international adoptees are at risk of deportation. Depending on the particular regime to be imposed on what counts as a citizenship-guaranteeing doc, many of the rest of us might be too.

A new leader has arrived and will help us get out of this mess.

I think the story of dam removal along the Klamath and Eel rivers in CA, the Indigenous activism that has made this possible, and the story of the return of salmon (and its effects) is the most hopeful story in the whole damn US of A. Frankly, it's world-historical. A faint sign of real change.

You may have noticed that folks who are from Chicago love this city. There's a reason for that. I walked to the lake with friends yesterday, and when I saw the waves rolling in, I felt something shift back into place inside of me. So many parts of this city are part of me.
