That thing you're sure the devs never thought of and that would make the game 1000 times better? Someone definitely thought about it ... obsessed over it ... it was someone's pet project, but there wasn't enough time, resources, or someone above wasn't sold on it and it never got done.

the idea that games are the result of a single person's ironclad vision rather than a thousand little decisions and compromises and individual people's ideas all coming together in complicated ways

A lot of times writing in games as seen as glue to make things work instead of a core pillar of the game's design; it should be collaborate with the other disciplines frequently! (This also extends to VA as well - actors should have more context instead of acting in the dark via NDAs!)

Gamers seem convinced writers have enormous power over the direction of the game, when in fact we’re often there to justify gameplay decisions posthoc If ONLY writers had the power gamers believe we have, games would probably be a lot better 🤷

Katie's work on Yatzli and the impact she had on Avowed cannot fit on a single resume. And yet, despite that, Katie's best work is still ahead of her. So this industry had better wise the fuck up and get her a job.

Weird fun fact before I go sleep for a really long time. @silopolis.bsky.social was also laid off. He worked on ME2. That game inspired me to pursue working on games. Like everyone who was let go, he does incredible work. Least I'm with one of my heroes

Jay Turner taught me so so much about writing, companion work, RPGs, and smart dialogue. Whenever we’d get on a call he always brought up points I hadn’t considered in a way that made me a better writer, designer, and person. I loved coordinating on character work together—a real privilege.

Jay came to the studio in a *difficult* time, where it seemed that hardship would never extract its talons from his flesh, and nonetheless handled himself with grace and professionalism. He and his talents deserve a good home.

I'm very sorry to announce that I was one of the devs affected by the Obsidian layoffs today. At least for four years, it was a beautiful dream. If you need a writer with experience in everything from the fog of war to romance - especially if you're open to remote - please get in touch.

I was one of the dozens of devs laid off at Obsidian today. Incredibly priveleged to have landed my dream job right after school. Obsidian was an amazing place to work. The cancer Xbox. And Ive always been an Xbox hater! Fun fact: I dont even own my own game on their shitty console.

Soojin is a brilliant and adaptable artist. Did you love the look of Pentiment? They were responsible for a ton of it. Out of the many, many ways they left their mark on that game, though, my favorites have to be the Landsknecht playing cards and story-time with Brother Sebhat.

I worked with Katie once she joined the Avowed team, and the difference she made was immediate. She understood RPGs inside-out, her dialogue made us snort in laughter constantly, and she wrote the most agonizing conundrums in quest lines that players simply loved. I miss working with her every day.

So many amazing, wonderful people - and me - were laid off today. All of them deserve the world and I hope they get back on their feet soon. As for me? I suppose I'm open for work once the shock wears off.

Katie joined Avowed and immediately started writing some of the funniest stuff in the game. If you liked Yatzli, Tira Nui Hajime, "The Wasteland Courier" quest—you liked Katie's work.

Jay brought a ton of experience and knowledge to the Avowed team. The core concept of Galawain's Tusks came from him, as did my favorite grumpy survivalist, Marius, whose story ended up being one of the most touching in the game.

I and a good number of very talented game devs were laid off by Obsidian as part of the Microsoft sacrificial rituals this morning. If you or anyone you know is looking for a Senior Writer/ND with more than two decades' experience in titles like Dragon Age and Mass Effect, please let me know!
