They deployed ten times as many agents to a city 40% the size and then had them drive around in military convoys publicly snatching random pedestrians before launching tear gas. Also, they shot a lady in the face

Vance on Jan. 8: "You have a federal law enforcement official engaging in federal law enforcement action. That's a federal issue. That guy's protected by absolute immunity." Vance today: "I didn't say that officers who engaged in wrongdoing would enjoy immunity. That's absurd."

I came to Minneapolis to report on what's going on, and one of the main questions I showed up with is "just what is the scale of the resistance?" After all, we're all used to the news calling Portland a "war zone" or whatever when it's just some protests in one part of town.

I thought I heard whistles in the distance and was trying to figure out ICE was but then realized it was just my cat snoring behind me. This kind of stress can’t be healthy long-term.

Maybe send your "blue lives matter, ICE is just deporting criminals" brother-in-law this video. (There are people who absolutely don't care but there are also people who are assuming things are fine and not paying close attention.)

In happier news my favorite Uptown resident of the day was the guy standing on his roof with a cowboy hat and what looked like a mug of tea. May we all be kept safe under his watchful gaze.

I’m no stranger to the hours-long Midwestern Goodbye, but when most of a city’s population is willing to risk their own safety just to ask you to leave, it’s time to get a fucking move on and GET OUT

please stop copying and pasting any messages to spread any information if you aren’t personally verifying it’s accurate and what the source actually is, especially about saturday’s events. telling people to avoid downtown when you don’t know who is saying that isn’t helpful

My message to Noem, Miller, Bovino: You’ve lost. Go home. You can’t move without us following you. You can’t get out of your cars without 100 times your number descending on you. You’re setting millions of dollars on fire only to kindle a hatred against you that will never die.

Weirdly felt safer walking on Lake Street this morning than I ever have, seeing dozens of neighbors committed to watching each other’s backs. Who knew this was what we needed to finally “revitalize uptown”? Just goes to show that real public safety doesn’t come from the police.

Just a reminder that LAST time Mpls was the center of a reckoning around police violence, we ended shoveling more money to police and less to social services. Minneapolis still feels the wounds of the last time, with an even richer police force. This is what we need to guard against, yet again.

For everyone thinking "it's gotten so bad, maybe I'll pack up my family and move to the Wedge," let me warn you — the Wedge neighborhood may be a paradise, but it's still part of the United States. And where would you park?

Earnest post, but: a thing I like here is it’s okay to have moments of happiness in public without being broadly scolded, and I believe that sustaining this kind of humanity will be very important as we resist fascism. We have to sustain each other. Making joy isn’t denial, it’s how we will survive
