Had a bit of a scare yesterday; Harry was sneezing a bit and wheezing a lot, so ended up rushing her to emergency vet. Thankfully she doesn't have any avian flu, and there's no sign of gapeworm. She may just have a sore throat, since the wheezing is coming from her larynx. She has meds anyway 🤞

After the loss of my rooster, Alfred, I wanted to get a new boy to join my girls. A quick call to a rooster rescue centre nearby, and this lovely boy was looking for a new home. Picked him up this morning, slowly introducing him to the girls. He's been named Davidson, I don't think I'll change it.

Gutted! One of my roosters died today. Alfred Spatchcock managed to get his foot tangled in fencing around the enclosure, probably trying to fight with another of my boys, and likely died due to heat & stress. I had him about 3 years, raised from a chick, so sad to see him gone

I currently have 16 hens. Until recently only my youngest 10 were laying. 2 recent additions (Cracker & Cheese) weren't laying when they came to us, but within days, they started production again. Then two of my older girls started up again, meaning I was getting eggs from 14 girls. /1

Finally, I have all my art prints from @mr-bingo.bsky.social framed and hung!! Not totally decided on positions yet, the 3 on the right probably need some adjusting

Joy (sarcasm intended) Bird flu h5n1 has arrived in Australia. It's just been detected in WA, so no cases even remotely near to me yet. But I will be keeping an eye on it, need to protect my chickens!!

Two new chickens arrived this morning! Cookie (black chicken) & Cheese (white chicken) were reluctantly let go by their previous owners who are moving, so we're taking them in.

Didn't feel like posting this on the day, on Friday, Henghis departed. She was only about 2 yrs old, and had been poorly, but seemed fine for the last week or so. Took a serious downturn on Friday morning, and passed away around lunchtime

Had appt with ENT Consultant this morning. Ear is not improving, and 10 years of intervention since I moved to Australia hasn't made any improvement. issue was identified in 2002 in UK, and after I moved to Australia, once I got into the system, it's been a fruitless battle to get it under control

Lost water this morning. Turns out the neighbours have a leak, and turned off the wrong mains valve in error 🤦

Had another hearing test last week. Audiologist described my hearing loss as between moderate to profound, and I might be a good candidate for a cochlear implant as I cannot wear normal hearing aids. Will have to see what the ENT consultant says next week..

Just had very enjoyable and extremely informative coffee lesson! 1 to 1 lesson with an expert, learnt I have been making my coffee entirely the wrong way haha! And he was a judge at the competition I entered a couple of months ago!

Watching The Tunnel on Amazon Prime. An English/French collaboration, other than providing subtitled translation when someone is talking in French, Series 1 Episode 1 has no subtitles, episodes 2-4 (as far as I have watched) have only German subtitles. Baffling.

*sigh* another brief power cut this morning. Only lasted a few seconds, but enough that I have to reset a number of devices around the house

My phone died overnight!! Was down to about 17% battery when I plugged in as normal, but now refusing to turn on this morning. Somewhat fortunately, I do still have an older phone, but will cause issues with authentication apps...

Power cut out about 1hr ago. Fairly common experience here, unfortunately. But throughout the summer, with all the storms, we never lost power. We've lost power three times in the past month or so, when weather has been uneventful. Thank Bod we have a generator, keeping fridges & lights on

Just made a small batch of Jamaican Jerk sauce. Adapted from an online recipe, which is probably already adapted from an authentic recipe, the recipe called for 2/3 Scotch Bonnet chilies, so I substituted for 3 Hallow's Eve chilies from the freezer, almost the last of my batch of homegrown superhots

Finally awake enough to eat. Local supermarket had hot cross buns still (when even was Easter?!?) so a couple of brioche buns toasted & buttered. Ate them before I'd even finished making coffee!!

Went to mow the garden this morning. Blades weren't turning. The belt had slipped so it wasn't engaging the blades, but also one of the blades appears to have torn through the deck, so likely need to buy a new deck. Or I am considering upgrading to a newer mower anyway
