Columbia Road Flower Market goes back to 1869. It served the old local French Huguenot population who were keen on cut flowers, they were also keen on caged song birds too, and one of the streets pubs is still called ‘The Birdcage’ as an echo of this time.

In what might be a "last glimpse of summer", here's "The Lake, Whipps Cross" by Elwin Hawthorne from 1932. Also known locally as "Hollow Ponds", I believe, they were initially dug for gravel &, once that had stopped in 1878, they were remodelled in 1905 as a lido & ornamental lakes. #ElwinHawthorne

A Saddleback Pig From time to time, you hear stories of pigs escaping onto vegetable plots. Once they do, they happily eat themselves senseless—a disaster, though still slightly amusing. That mix of character and charm struck me as the perfect subject for a #painting #allotment

With autumn seemingly waiting in the wings for us, here's one that is a great favourite of mine: "The Bridge to the Pagoda, Victoria Park" by Albert Turpin from his post-war work, most likely the mid to late 1950s. The old suspension bridge was replaced a little while later. #AlbertTurpin

Corfe Castle is most famous for its part in The English Civil war in the 17th Century. At this time, it was owned by Sir John Bankes, Lord Chief Justice to King Charles I. Well, he fell out with Oliver Cromwell, so Cromwell had the place blown up!
