BHM Pioneer of the Day: James Samuel Risien Russell. James Samuel Risien Russell was Britain’s first Black consultant. In 1900, Russell described subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord. During World War I, he became an leading expert in shellshock. In 2021, he received a blue plaque.

BHM Pioneer of the Day: Harold Moody! Harold Moody was a Jamaican doctor and civil rights activist. In 1931, he founded the League for Coloured Peoples to combat racism. The League's work led to the Race Relations Act (1965). In 1995, Moody was honoured with a blue plaque.

Pioneer of the Day: Mary Seacole! Mary Seacole was a nurse who treated soldiers during the Crimean War, often nursing them on the battlefield. In 2003, Seacole was voted the Greatest Black Briton, and in 2016, a statue was erected in her honour at St Thomas’ Hospital in London.
